Songspun Spring School Assembly & Performance Update

blog-1It has been a while since I checked in! I had a very productive and busy spring in the schools with lot of return school assembly performances and residencies.

It was great to be back at Davis Elementary in New Rochelle! We wrote another new character education song with the 5th grade. It was great working with Carol Kelly and the teachers there, and I am always surprised with the new ideas that the kids come up with to create something completely different from what the kids did last year.

A couple of other really fun school assembly and performance projects:

  • I did my yearly celebration with the 6th grade kids at Maple Ave. in Saratoga, NY. It is always fun to remind them how awesome they are before they go into testing.
  • Returned to May Moore Primary in Port Ewen, NY to help them celebrate reading. I love helping the teachers get the younger kids fired up about reading and celebrating their hard work.
  • We also celebrated reading at Marlboro Elementary with their PARP (Pick A Reading Partner) celebration.
  • I was made another visit to Kensington Elementary in Glens Falls, NY where we did a quick 2-day residency and wrote a song about friendship with the 1st grade. The kids sang on the recording and sounded great!
  • I even found myself in Queens, NY exposing the kids there to having someone simply come in and play live for them. That visit and performance was funded through The Lincoln Center.
  • We wrote 3 new character songs at my return visit to Beekman Elementary in Poughkeepsie, NY. That is a yearly residency with the first grade there. This is a school that really supports Arts In Education and believes in the importance of the Arts in elementary education.

The more I do this the more that I realize the possibility for song topics are endless.  At the week long residency I did at St. Clements Elementary School in Saratoga, NY this year, we wrote songs about shapes and money!
