End Of Year School Performance Residencies

The end of the year found me doing end of the year celebrations at some regular schools and also had school performance residencies and events at some schools that were new for me.

I have been doing the end of the year celebration at Big Cross St. School in Glens Falls for many years. (I used to bring my younger son there as a preschooler with me – he will be graduating next year!) It was a special year. My friend who is a first grade teacher there retired this year. Congratulations to Holly Schulze!

It’s great to do something different as well.  One residency that is different for me is the yearly week long residency at Charlton Heights Elementary with the 5th grade that takes place in June. We like to do something different each year. We do write a song as part of it, but the focus of the residency is creating an interactive performance that the 5th grade puts on for the rest of the school. We create a script in which the kids do the narrating and are the total focus of the performance.

This is such a great district to work in! The principal, Tim Sinnenberg is so supportive and involved, as are the classroom teachers and the Art, music and phys-ed teachers. This year our focus was health and nutrition where we incorporated the science curriculum about the body systems into the performance. The kids did a song about cells that just rocked – it was called “Our Bodies Rock”. We also incorporated a Red Grammer song, one of my songs and “Dem Bones” into the performance. The audience was involved and we all had a really good time while we were learning. It was a great way to finish up my school performance residencies for the year!

I am now into my summer schedule at the resorts around Lake George. I do a lot of family shows and bonfires as well as summer camps and summer school programs that will role nonstop right into the Fall. I do try to save a day or two a week to enjoy the lake with my family. I feel very grateful to live where I do, and my oldest son came home from out west (Lake Tahoe) for the summer. It is great to have time with him!

If you know of a school district who is looking for an experienced teaching artist  to provide school performance residencies, character education or anti-bullying performances, have them call me at (518) 798-2030 for more information or to schedule their event today.

Enjoy your summer!
