School Character Education Presenter

Recently I visited Fort Edward Elementary where we kicked off their new character education program called High Five For Forts Pride by writing a couple of school songs. This residency was largely funded through a grant from the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council (LARAC) and New York State Council On The Arts (NYSCA).

I also had a school in Connecticut ask me if I could create a school presentation about mindfulness for them. It is something that is happening in California schools. It is a way for kids to deal with stress, anger or any other negative emotions that may come up. It teaches them to stop and breathe. They teach different breathing techniques that make the kids stop before they react. Stop, take some time and relax. I think part of this is also getting to know yourself and what makes you upset, so that when you are in a situation you can see the bad feelings coming and you can say to yourself, “I know why I’m feeling this way”. I also need to ask myself once I have calmed the disturbance if there is anything I need to do to resolve the situation. Sometimes I am disturbed for a good reason and there is something I need to do to take care of myself. I might need to walk away or stand up for myself or ask for help. Part of this process for me is also to turn my thoughts to how I can be of service and try to think of others and how I may be helpful, kind of redirecting myself.

I touched on all of these ideas in very simple ways for the kids to plant some seeds and reinforce what they are learning about it in their school. It is really very cool and is a part of my life. I learned about it through other things I was doing but didn’t call it mindfulness, however it is very much a part of my life. These are useful tools that everyone can use. When I can change how I’m feeling it gives me a whole new perspective on a problem. Another technique is visualization, for example visualizing yourself on a beach, feeling the warmth of the sun and maybe the sand between your toes. Another tool I have is reminding myself of things I am grateful for. I can actually make a list. This makes me think about what I have rather than what I don’t have. More to come on this.
